The Aruvamanai (or Arivalmanai) is a traditional cutting tool with a long, curved blade attached to a platform, designed to be held down by foot. With the sharper edge facing the user, both hands are free to guide and control whatever is being cut, from delicate shrimp to large pumpkins. This technique offers exceptional precision and ease, making it a versatile tool for a wide range of tasks.

Although its origins are deeply rooted in South India, where it is known by various names such as Aruvamanai in Tamil, Kathipeeta in Telugu, and Vili or Morli in Marathi, it has also been an integral part of culinary traditions across other Indian regions, including Odisha (Panikhi) and Bihar (Pirdai).

For centuries, the Aruvamanai has been a cornerstone of Indian kitchens, passed down through generations, symbolizing the wisdom and ingenuity of traditional cooking practices.
